Mode of development and interspecific avian brood parasitism

چکیده

Avian interspecific brood parasites differ considerably in their commitment to parasitism; 87 species are obligate brood parasites, whereas 35 species are known to be facultative brood parasites. This variation is strongly related to mode of development. Obligate parasitism is found almost exclusively in altricial species, whereas facultative interspecific parasitism is predominant in precocial birds. We propose that the association between mode of development and form of parasitism reflects a fundamental difference between altricial and precocial birds in the relative benefits of emancipation from parental care after laying. We argue that altricial brood parasites obtain such a large increase in realized fecundity by avoiding the costs of parental care that obligate parasitism is favored over facultative parasitism. In contrast, precocial brood parasites gain relatively little in terms of increased fecundity via obligate parasitism, and much of this increase could potentially be gained by facultative parasitism. Thus, obligate interspecific brood parasitism will not be favored in precocial birds. Three factors influence this difference between altricial and precocial species: (1) altricial birds have relatively more energy and nutrients with which to lay additional eggs, (2) altricial birds can produce more eggs for the same amount of energy and nutrients, and (3) altricial birds realize a greater relative gain in fecundity for each additional egg laid. We suggest further that facultative interspecific parasitism in birds may originate simply through a carry over of intraspecific parasitism; 29 of 33 facultative interspecific parasites also parasitize conspecifics. Facultative parasitism of other species would provide a greater range of potential host nests and could be maintained as an evolutionarily stable end point by the same mechanisms that maintain intraspecific brood parasitism. Interspecific brood parasitism in galliform birds

Mode of development in birds helps determine the form of brood parasitism a species exhibits. Most knowledge of precocial brood parasites comes from a single avian family, the waterfowl (Anatidae: Anseriformes). Here we review cases of interspecific brood parasitism (IBP) in a second group of precocial birds, the order Galliformes. IBP is uncommon but taxonomically widespread, occurring in at l...

Spatial patterns, ecological niches, and interspecific competition of avian brood parasites: inferring from a case study of Korea

Since obligate avian brood parasites depend completely on the effort of other host species for rearing their progeny, the availability of hosts will be a critical resource for their life history. Circumstantial evidence suggests that intense competition for host species may exist not only within but also between species. So far, however, few studies have demonstrated whether the interspecific c...

Interspecific brood parasitism in blackbirds (Icterinae): a phylogenetic perspective.

An 852-base pair region of the cytochrome-b gene was sequenced for the brood parasitic cowbirds and 20 additional taxa of the New World blackbirds (Icterinae). The goal of the study was to determine (i) whether interspecific brood parasitism is multiply derived within the assemblage and (ii) the nature of the evolutionary transformation between various forms of interspecific brood parasitism. C...

Sexual imprinting misguides species recognition in a facultative interspecific brood parasite.

Sexual reproduction relies on the recognition of conspecifics for breeding. Most experiments in birds have implicated a critical role for early social learning in directing subsequent courtship behaviours and mating decisions. This classical view of avian sexual imprinting is challenged, however, by studies of megapodes and obligate brood parasites, species in which reliable recognition is achi...
